Want to sail the seven seas with some humorous pirates? Travel the streets of 19th-century Baltimore with Edgar Allan Poe? Catch up on this year’s best-picture winner from the comfort of your own couch? There’s a little bit of everything this week. Here’s our look at the week ahead in entertainment.

Movies
The pirates are coming! No, not the Pirates of the Caribbean. The sailors of “Pirates! Band of Misfits” are animated characters created in that “Wallace & Gromit” stop-motion style that you either hate or love. Hugh Grant voices their hapless captain, with Salma Hayek and Jeremy Piven also chiming in. If you’ve seen the preview, you may remember the scene where Grant’s pirate boards a leper boat, only to be horrified when limbs start falling off. That scene was changed after British organization Lepra Health in Action complained, but really, we don’t think the film will miss one joke. The Hollywood Reporter is already calling it “a delightful romp whose varied pleasures should please kids all along the age spectrum.” (Opens April 27.)

Who best to give advice on breaking into Hollywood than Robert Rodriguez who got his start selling his body to research to fund his film El Mariachi. The Sin City, Machete, and Once Upon A Time in Mexico director spoke as the keynote speaker at a recent event for Latino filmmakers and actors, and offered some words of wisdom.

The National Association of Latino Producers Association held their annual networking event at Universal City’s Sheraton Hotel (L.A.) last weekend and invited industry leaders to speak to thousands of aspiring directors, writers, and actors. While technology has made it easier for filmmakers like Rodriguez to create shorts and film, Rodriguez reinforces the idea that “content is king”, he told CineMovie’s David Gonzales. He later added that while there are a lack of Latinos in the media, the main goal of a filmmaker is to focus on what’s important to them. The Texas-native also gave some sound advise to attendess by noting that there are no failures in this business. He suggested you learn from the mistakes of others and yourself to improve your future work.

Robert Rodriguez is currently working on a sequel to Machete starring Danny Trejo.

My tia received an I-Pad last Christmas which, of course, led to my abuela and 7 year old prima fighting over the toy. My abuela has never turned on a desktop computer and has a fuzzy understanding of what the internet actually is, but when she gets going on Fruit Ninja the expression of bliss on her face must be seen to be believed. My prima, on the other hand, learned to type on a touch screen, is far better at Angry Birds then I ever will be, and interacts with the internet more on her mobile device then she ever will via a desktop computer. This experience is a microcosm of the changes facing the country and telecom industry in response to the profound shifts in technology and demography.

Technology adoption rates among Hispanics are, for the first time, not only keeping pace with the general population, but the annual Nielson Report on Hispanic Consumers reveals that they are actually leading the growth in mobile media adoption. 60 percent of Hispanic households own at least one video and Internet enabled cell phone compared with 43 percent of general households. Hispanics are 28 percent more likely to own a Smartphone than non-Hispanic Whites. Hispanics outpace all ethnic groups in mobile data service consumption including music and picture downloads. The growing Hispanic population, along with its relative youth and expanding buying-power, will have significant implications for the telecom industry.

The U.S. Hispanic Buying power amounted to $1.1 billion in 2011 this number is only going to grow as this population is expected to grow 167 percent over the next 50 years. More importantly, though, this population is incredibly young. 23 percent of children under 17 in the country are Hispanic. The facts are clear: Hispanics will be huge consumers of mobile media technologies in the near future and their share of the market will only increase with time.

While Hispanics have generally lagged behind the general population in home broadband usage, their current consumption of mobile media is actually falling in line with overall internet consumption trends. The national average for home-based broadband consumption is 76 percent, while Hispanic usage is only 62 percent. Yet overall home broadband usage is in decline, withpenetration and desktop sales both falling. Many analysts note that mobile media devices are supplementing desktops or replacing them all together.

These surging mobile adoption rates converge with rising Hispanic Per-Capita income, making US Hispanics now wealthier than any of the highly coveted BRIC Countries. With that much disposable income and the fact that Hispanics utilize mobile media usage more than any other group, producers of content must start paying closer attention. Compared to the general population, Hispanics spend 68 percent more time watching video on the Internet and 20 percent more time watching video on their mobile phones.

By next Christmas I will have finally gotten rid of my underperforming Blackberry, which means that for five minutes I will be at the same level of technological proficiency as my prima. For the holiday she will get the next generation version of whatever I get, leading to much teasing. As for abuela, there is sure to be good news as well. My tia already has her order in for the Ipad 3 which will give my Abuela all the time in the world to play Fruit Ninja on her brand new/old first gen Ipad. As goes the Ramos household, so goes the country. Who would have thought?

Kristian Ramos is a Policy Advisor at NDN who covers immigration, the border and Hispanic Demographics. Before working at NDN, Kristian worked in the United States Senate for Majority Leader Harry Reid in the Senate Democratic Communications Center. He is proud to say that he grew up in a South West Border City, and reports that it is not a war zone.

http://www.latina.com/entertainment/movies/meet-latino-talent-musical-chairs

Musical Chairs isn’t your typical dance flick. The new indie movie introduces you to the world of wheelchair ballroom dancing. We told you it wasn’t exactly Dirty Dancing. Although the film directed by Susan Seidelman has received mix reviews, we love that the film includes a Latino lead actors. Here’s a rundown of the Latino talent in the film.

EJ Bonilla: The Puerto Rican actor plays an aspiring professional dancer from the Bronx named Armando. Besides falling in love with Mia (played by Leah Pipes) a fellow dancer who suffers a serious car accident, Armando is also challenged by his meddling mother. The 22-year-old actor has starred in several other indie flicks including, Mamitas and the short Crazy Beats Strong Every Time. His fluid dance moves and loveable stares warmed our hearts in the flick. We look forward to seeing him in more lead roles!

Priscilla Lopez: She doesn’t need much of an introduction to us! The Puerto Rican actress who has played the lead mother in the hit Broadway show, In the Heights, stars as Armando’s traditional (and at times difficult) mother Isabel in the movie. Sure, her character is riddled with clichés like in the opening scene at a botanica, but she also has a familiar loveable quality that makes us smile throughout the film.

Angelic Zambrana: The actress, best known for her roles in Precious and Fighting, plays a love potion-wearing stalker named Rosa in the flick. Granted, her character eventually grows on us when she quits the crazy stuff and actually starts supporting Armando’s efforts to jumpstart the wheelchair competition. Zambrana makes many of the comedic scenes actually enjoyable to watch.

Cine Latino covers, well, all things relating to Latino culture and the movies, every Friday.

Venezuelan actor Edgar Ramirez makes being a villain look effortless in Jonathan Liebesman’s Wrath of the Titans, in theaters today. Ramirez plays Ares, the son of Zeus and Hera. As the god of war, this Caracas native vehemently goes toe-to-toe with co-stars Sam Worthington, Liam Neeson and Ralph Fiennes.

“I grew up watching fantasy movies and always had a wish to be in one,” said Ramirez while promoting the film. “So to play Ares, one of the most prominent Olympian gods and, by definition, the greatest warrior ever, was a chance to fulfill that in a really fun way.”

Here’s how the story goes, Ares is driven by revenge so he forms an alliance with his uncle, god of the underworld Hades, and his grandfather, the ancient Titan Kronos. Together with Hades, Ares conspires to capture and imprison Zeus in a plot to bring down the gods and unleash chaos on humanity. Crazy, right? But first he will have to take on his demigod brother, Perseus (Worthington).

“Ares enjoys fighting for the sake of fighting,” said Ramirez. “The heat of battle is what ignites this character. He’s violent and aggressive, with a very big ego, yet fragile in a way—his pride is easily deflated by what he perceives to be Zeus’ preference for Perseus, the son who never loved Zeus. Ares feels excluded, so when Hades presents him with an opportunity for revenge, he takes it.”

Ramirez made his American film debut in Tony Scott’s Domino, opposite Keira Knightley and Mickey Rourke. Audiences might remember him from The Bourne Ultimatum, Vantage Point, Steven Soderbergh’s Che and most recently Carlos, a three-part miniseries on the Sundance Channel. His portrayal of Venezuelan revolutionary Ilich Ramirez Sanchez brought him Emmy, Golden Globe and Screen Actors Guild Award nominations.

He’s locked in to co-star with Jessica Chastain, Mark Strong and Joel Edgerton in Katheryn Bigelow’s Osama Bin Laden film. With his growing international appeal, Ramirez is also starring in the French film A Monkey on My Shoulder. Yes, ladies, he speaks French too, and get this–he’s also fluent in German, Italian and Spanish.

AFI has teamed with jeans-maker Levi’s in a new contest calling on “creators, makers, visual thinkers” to share their vision of a better future. “Show us the Way,” asks all those with the ability to look at nothing and see everything, to submit a treatment for a five-minute short film about “a tomorrow that is better than today.” Each of the six (6) winners will receive $5,000 to make their film and a $500 Levi’s wardrobe for their cast. AFI will help judge the contest and provide winning contestants ten (10) hours with an AFI mentor. All six films will have the opportunity to be showcased at AFI Fest in 2012, and all directors will be flown out to the event, all expenses paid, to present their vision in person.
