Esperanza lives in Texas with her Mexican-American parents and her three younger siblings. She works hard to contribute to her family’s income while she saves up to go to school. On a whim, with a friend, they decide to buy Lotto tickets. That same day, Esperanza returns home to discover that her father is very sick. He is no longer able to work and her income will become crucial to her family’s survival. Esperanza forgets about the ticket. We soon find out Esperanza picked the winning numbers, though she herself is oblivious. She takes a job as a waitress at a strip club, but it is not long before she becomes a stripper. As she struggles to bring in more money, her moral boundaries are tested. When she discovers her father needs surgery, we wonder how far she is willing to go. Throughout the story, the winning ticket is in danger of being lost or stolen. Will Esperanza lose the ticket and never claim her winnings? Will she lose her self and never again be whole? These questions become one and the same in “The Ticket.”
Esperanza vive en Texas con sus padres de origen mexicano y sus 3 hermanos. Trabaja duro para contribuir con los ingresos familiares mientras ahorra para sus estudios. Con una amiga se les ocurre comprar un boleto de lotería. Ese mismo día, al volver a su casa, Esperanza descubre que su padre está muy enfermo. Como él no podrá trabajar, los ingresos de Esperanza serán cruciales para la supervivencia familiar. Ella se olvida por completo de la compra del boleto. Pronto veremos que Esperanza tiene el número ganador. Debido a las preocupaciones en las que se encuentra inmersa no registra el hecho. Toma un trabajo de moza en un club nudista, y convirtiéndose enseguida en bailarina. Mientras se esfuerza por ganar más dinero, pone a prueba su moral. Cuando descubre que su padre necesita una cirugía, ella se pregunta hasta dónde estará dispuesta a llegar. A lo largo de la historia, el boleto ganador está en peligro de extraviarse o ser robado. ¿Perderá Esperanza el boleto y nunca reclamará su premio? ¿Dañará su integridad para siembre? Estas preguntas se hacen una y la misma en “El Ticket”.
