El Conjunto Nueva Ola

Directly from the city of hope – Mexico City, Mexico – in the month of March, 2012, the six-man group EL CONJUNTO NUEVA OLA released its first musical production, an album that is sure to make history. A very unique musical collective, one that will revolutionize the recording industry. The first promotional single from their album is titled “CHIDO, CHIDO” (“Cool, cool”) a classic title in the history of tropical music, but one that here takes on a completely different vibe.

The group is comprised of lead singer Urbano López, guitarist Luzio Nava, bassist Primitivo Ríos, percussionist Hipólito Madero, El Tacho on timpani and El Raio Manzares on keyboards. Their mission is simple: bring flavor and get people to dance to the rhythm of cumbia, mixing new wave, rock and disco sounds into hits from various iconic groups like La Sonora Dinamita, to the late Chico Che & Rigo Tovar.

Under the LUZ RECORD label, their first record was headed by renowned songwriter/producer Ferra with José Quiroz as Executive Producer. The tracks include “Cuando seas grande”, “Chicharrona (My sherona)”, “Cumbia town (Funky town)”, “De quien chon”, “Chido, chido” (first promotional single), “La estaca”, “Perdóname mi amor”, “Los luchadores”, “La suavecita”, “Mi cucú”, “Albañil de la pensil”, “Vía láctea”, “Quítate la máscara”, and “Take on me”.

Despite its track list, EL CONJUNTO NUEVA OLA does not consider itself a cover band. The group members affirm that they “take the work of (de)composing lyrics from powerful tunes like ‘Chicharrona’, ‘El albañil de la pensil’ and ‘Cumbia town’ and others very seriously.”

The next single coming out is “El Pirilí” set to be released August 28th followed by El Tieso in late October. The band is preparing a 6 song E.p of original compositions that go from their distinctive humor to sexy-cumbia love songs called “Poemas musicales de mis pechugas

We The Folk

We The Folk: fiery folk-fusion coming to your ears from a collection of voices and instruments, “mixing up their sometimes Spanish, sometimes English, Latin-Klezmer-Folk hybrid of music in a stunning swirl of rhythm” (You Make My World Rock). With acoustic guitar, violin, accordion, bass, percussion, and plenty of voice, this Los Angeles-based band sings the songs of Cali-folk, young and old, and gives everyone a reason to dance. We The Folk began as a trio performing impromptu shows in public spaces around the UCLA campus. Student demand rapidly transformed these “pop up” performances into dance parties and official campus events. We The Folk grew into a recognizable campus presence after headlining the World Music and Movement Festival and opening for David Grisman as part of the Center of the Art of Performance in Royce Hall. As a quintet, We The Folk has played shows in major Los Angeles venues such as The Troubadour, The Teragram Ballroom, Hotel Cafe, and Black Rabbit Rose. The band holds several residencies around the greater Los Angeles area. After experimenting with different labels for a few years, We The Folk has assumed the genre of “LA Folk”, happily representing the voice of the Angeleno and enveloping its audiences in a dynamic and energetic experience.

Other Relevant Info: UPCOMING: My new single “Mi Debilidad” will be out at the end of the summer! ANECDOTE: I had started to develop my new project/album, a tribute to my father’s music from the 60’s, Aníbal De Peña, but something still hadn’t clicked. I wanted to find a direction that kept the classic sound yet sounded fresh. At the time I was doing a residency at the Hotel Cafe, and invited musicians I admired to play with me here and there. Cuñao was one of them. After that show, we started working and playing more and more. Until one day they accompanied a few of these new/old songs. It was just perfect. The combination of my restructuring of the songs with their brilliant arrangement ideas just worked. It felt magical. We’ve just recorded a whole album! The first single will be out very soon.
