LFI BELOW-THE-LINE

The LFI Below-the-Line Fellowship is a comprehensive 6-month initiative designed to equip emerging filmmaking professionals with the foundational skills, technical training, and professional guidance necessary to launch sustainable careers in key below-the-line crafts.

The program combines instruction, mentorship, and on-set experience, culminating in professional exposure through internships and job placements.

Minimum Requirements:

  • At least 18 years of age or older at the time of application
  • Intended for emerging filmmakers who are post-high school
  • Must demonstrate 1-2 years of prior filmmaking experience or training in your area of interest
  • Must be available for hybrid and in-person participation February – July 2026

Eligible disciplines: Production Design, Production Management, Assistant Directing, Assistant Editing, Hair & Makeup

Production design serves as the inaugural discipline, with the program developed and led by Academy Award-winning production designer Eugenio Caballero (Pan’s Labyrinth, Roma, Bardo). This groundbreaking initiative aims to address  critical needs in below-the-line positions within the film industry while creating meaningful pathways for emerging talent.

How Simone Kirlew Mentors and Produces with Purpose

For the past couple of years, producer Simone Kirlew has been a steady creative force behind the Youth Cinema Project Alumni Fellowship films, serving as producer mentor for the program’s last two alumni productions while acting as a vital link between the Latino Film Institute and each production team. Beyond nurturing the fellows’ creative vision, she oversaw the coordination that allowed each film to come to life, managing logistics, schedules, and on-the-ground production needs with precision and care.
