Two short films by LALIFF alumni filmmakers have achieved Oscar®-qualifying status for the 97th Academy Awards®. Learn more about the films, and where you can screen and meet the creators behind these stories.
Gabriela
Directed by Evelyn Lorena, the film follows a young, undocumented Guatemalan woman as she dreams of joining a Country Club swim team. The film explores themes around self worth, personal freedom, and self-acceptance. Evelyn Lorena also stars in the film alongside María Telón (Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, Golden Globe-nominated La Llorona), and Viktor White (The Idea of You).
The film was the recipient of the Latino Film Institute’s Inclusion Fellowship in 2022, and produced by the Blended Future Project. The film has achieved Oscar®-qualifying status in the Live Action Short Film category.

Directed by Pablo Leon, the film follows a journalist who documents the experiences of people who lived through the tragic 12-year-long Salvadoran Civil War in the 1980s, exploring themes of childhood loss, violence against women and the indigenous population, and regaining a sense of hope for the future that spans over three generations.
The film received the Best US Latino Animated Short Film award at LALIFF 2024. It has achieved Oscar®-qualifying status in the Animated Short Film category.
