YCP at Work – Meet Dr. Jimenez Superintendent, Hacienda La Puente Unified School District
Dr. Alfonso Jimenez’s journey in education began in Long Beach, where he attended elementary, middle, and high school before studying physiology at California State University, Long Beach. While in college, he discovered a passion for science education through a unique volunteer opportunity with a mobile science museum. Traveling to elementary schools to teach hands-on science, he realized the power of engaging students through interactive learning, planting the seed for his lifelong commitment to education.
What started as an interest quickly became a calling. Dr. Jimenez spent seven years in the classroom before moving into administration. His path took him from assistant principal to principal, and eventually into district-level leadership roles, including assistant superintendent and deputy superintendent. Today, he leads Hacienda La Puente Unified School District as superintendent, with more than 29 years of experience behind him.
Dr. Jimenez describes his leadership style as deeply collaborative – shaped by his work across both school sites and district offices. “Working with other teachers or with other administrators, I have always had collaboration be the core of what I’m all about. I really believe in empowering our leaders and teachers so that we all have the ability and power to work together,” he shares.
For him, the impact of education is something that unfolds over time. “In education, sometimes you don’t know the impact you’ve made until many years later,” he reflects. “You hear about students who’ve gone on to do great things. Sometimes it’s a teacher who sends me an email sharing that a former student overcame challenges and achieved something remarkable. For me, just making an impact on a student every single day – that’s the most rewarding part.”
Hacienda La Puente Unified serves a culturally rich and diverse community that includes La Puente, Hacienda Heights, Valinda, West Puente Valley, the City of Industry, and parts of West Covina. Though the district was unified in 1970, its history stretches back to the 1800s. Today, its student population is predominantly Hispanic/Latino, with a significant Asian population as well. Dr. Jimenez is committed to addressing the academic, social, and emotional needs of every student.
One of the district’s ongoing challenges is addressing the lasting effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. Learning loss and student well-being remain top priorities. Under Dr. Jimenez’s leadership, the district has focused on learning acceleration and social-emotional support – creating environments where students feel safe, supported, and ready to learn.
The Youth Cinema Project (YCP) found a home in the district after members of the board of education learned about it at a conference. Knowing Dr. Jimenez had experience with the program in a previous district, they moved forward with confidence. With strong board support and his leadership, the district built a pathway that gives students access to YCP at multiple points throughout their academic journeys – from elementary to high school. From the beginning, the goal was not to introduce a standalone program but to make it a core part of the district’s academic structure.
YCP has become a powerful tool for student engagement, aligning with the district’s mission to nurture students’ talents, interests, and abilities. The program teaches storytelling and filmmaking while helping students develop confidence, collaboration, and a deeper understanding of themselves and their communities. Its creative structure inspires students in ways that traditional models sometimes can’t, while maintaining strong academic alignment with California standards.
From the start, YCP sparked enthusiasm across the district. A summer session drew students from various schools, and parents began requesting it as a permanent offering. The program’s impact often continues beyond the classroom: students who complete a YCP Signature course are eligible to join the YCP Alumni program, which offers more advanced instruction and mentorship. Each year, a select group of Alumni are chosen for the YCP Alumni Fellowship, where they collaborate on a large-scale production and continue developing their creative voices. This extended opportunity to nurture students’ talents and aspirations is one of the reasons YCP resonates so strongly with Dr. Jimenez’s commitment to long-term student success.
For Dr. Jimenez, YCP represents more than a program – it’s a source of pride and a testament to what’s possible when students are seen and supported. His long-term vision includes partnering with local universities to create postsecondary pathways for YCP students, ensuring their growth continues well beyond high school.
At the heart of it all, Dr. Jimenez leads with a deep belief in the power of education to change lives. His legacy is not defined by a single moment, but by the students who feel empowered, the educators who feel supported, and a district community that continues to grow stronger under his leadership.
